The cost of healthcare is a recurring theme in most countries’ public discourse due to the combination of an ageing population and the availability of more advanced (read, expensive) treatments. Inspired by Chao et al. (2017) and by the more recent Wang et al. (2019), we will try to build a simple BN to model an individual’s yearly medical expenditure. We will use the UK National Health Service (NHS) as an inspiration: it is free at the point of use for most things and it is financed through taxes (the National Insurance and general taxation).
For the sake of the example, we consider only seven variables:

• Age (A, discrete): the age, recorded as young (young), adult (adult) or old (old) as in the train survey in Chapter 1 .
• Pre-existing conditions (c, discrete): whether the individual has no pre-existing conditions (none), mild (mild) or severe pre-existing conditions (severe).
• Outpatient expenditure ( $\circ$, continuous): the cost of the individual’s outpatient hospital visits, like specialist consultations.
• Inpatient expenditure (I, continuous): the cost of the individual’s inpatient hospital visits, which include hospital admissions.
• Any hospital say ( $\mathrm{H}$, discrete): whether the individual spent any days at the hospital, recorded as none or any.
• Days of hospital stay ( $\mathrm{D}$, continuous): how many days the individual spent at the hospital.
• Taxes (T, continuous): the amount of money the individual should pay in taxes to cover his medical expenses.

Suppose we have a house in which we want to install a microcontroller that opens and closes windows to improve air quality through passive ventilation depending on outside conditions. The microcontroller will be connected to a number of sensors which will be placed both inside and outside the house and which will take various environmental measurements every 10 minutes. Using these measurements, the microcontroller will use a simple DBN to predict the air quality inside the house in 10 minutes time and open/close the windows to keep the air fresh and a comfortable inside temperature. This kind of home automation is called domotics, and represents a greener alternative than using air conditioning given in suitably mild climates.

We can think of indoor air quality as a combination of temperature and stuffiness, which we can define as the combination of humidity and the concentration of $\mathrm{CO}_{2}$. As for the outside conditions, we care mainly about the outside temperature. If windows are open, conditions inside the house will approach those outside due to air exchange. If the inside is cooler than the outside, opening the windows will increase the inside temperature. On the other hand, if the inside is hotter than the outside the inside temperature will decrease. Regardless of the temperature, opening the windows will let fresh air in and let stuffy air out thus improving the inside conditions.

All these changes, however, take time: windows can only let a limited volume of air in and out at once.
