According to electromagnetic (EM) theory, light is electromagnetic radiation that is visible by the human eye and causes the sensation of vision. The EM theory can explain the phenomena of polarization, interference, and diffraction of light. All forms of EM radiation propagate in vacuum with the same speed of $c=3 \times 10^{8}$ $\mathrm{m} / \mathrm{s}$. EM radiation is classified by wavelength, $\lambda$, and frequency, $f$. Wavelength, measured in meters $(\mathrm{m})$, is the distance between consecutive corresponding points of the same phase on the wave, such as two adjacent crests or troughs. Frequency, $f$, is the number of occurrences of a periodic event per unit of time. It is measured in $\mathrm{Hz}\left(1 \mathrm{~Hz}=1\right.$ cycle per second $=1 \mathrm{~s}^{-1}$ ). The wavelength and frequency are related to the speed $c$ of the wave by

The EM radiation has no upper or lower limits. The various forms of EM radiation are classified by the wavelength or frequency into radio, microwave, infrared, the visible region, ultraviolet, X-rays, and gamma rays (Fig. 2.15). The wavelength of visible light is a small band of the EM spectrum. It ranges from deep red, approximately $750 \mathrm{~nm}\left(f=4 \times 10^{14} \mathrm{~Hz}\right)$, to violet, approximately $400 \mathrm{~nm}(f=7.5 \times$ $\left.10^{14} \mathrm{~Hz}\right)\left(1 \mathrm{~nm}=10^{-9} \mathrm{~m}\right)$. The eye interprets the different wave lengths as different colors (Table 2.1).

White light generated by various sources (sun, fluorescent light bulbs, white LEDs) is defined as the complete mixture of all the wavelengths of the visible spectrum of light. A light of a specific wavelength is called monochromatic (from the Greek words mono, meaning one, and chromatic meaning related to color). Absolutely monochromatic light is an idealization. Light from laser is nearly monochromatic.

Interference and diffraction are the two pillars of most optical methods in experimental mechanics. Interference refers to the overlapping of two or more optical waves in space. It is governed by the principle of superposition which states that the response at any point and at any instant when two or more stimuli overlap is the sum of the responses caused by each stimulus individually. Functions that satisfy the principle of superposition are called linear functions. Thus, the electric field vector $\boldsymbol{E}$ that describes the resulting field obtained by superposition of two electric field vectors $E_{1}$ and $E_{2}$ is obtained by adding the two vectors as

Interference effects are most easily observed when the waves are sinusoidal with the same frequency. Also, the waves must be coherent, a condition that cannot be satisfied for the waves emitted by two independent sources. This is why in interferometric systems light is split from a single source to form more sources that are coherent, and therefore, can interfere. In conclusion, in order to achieve interference, the sources must be monochromatic and coherent.
