It has been shown that the depth-of-field and depth-of-focus can be extended by introducing an amplitude or phase modulation in the pupil of the system $[21,22,23,24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31]$. The advantage of phase modulation over amplitude modulation is that the light gathering power of the system is preserved. In particular, a family of odd symmetric phase masks – or asymmetric phase masks – has been demonstrated to be useful in extending the depth-of-field [21-27]. The exponent $k$ is a design parameter that defines the phase mask order.

We computationally simulate an imaging array where a quartic asymmetric phase mask is placed in front of each lenslet. Parameter $\alpha$ is empirically set to $35 / \pi$ (see Eq. 2.3). Comparing this figure with Fig. 2.2, one can see that the phase mask provides invariance to the distance of the object. However the IPSF is not as sharp as with a regular lenslet for an in-focus object. The evolution of the IPSF peak versus object distance is given in Fig. 2.10. The depth-of-field is now about $54 \mathrm{~mm}$, nine times greater than for a regular lenslet.

Now, as in Section 2.2.1, we consider the integral imaging setup described in Fig. 2.4. Figure $2.11$ shows a few elemental images obtained without digital restoration, while Fig. $2.12$ shows the same images after restoration. The inverse filter used for the restoration is obtained by averaging fiveOTFs corresponding to defocuses of $W_{20}=-2 \lambda, W_{20}=-\lambda, W_{20}=0, W_{20}=+\lambda$ and $W_{20}=+2 \lambda$, respectively. It can be noted that the objects are resolved in all cases, even for distance well outside the depth-of-field obtained in Fig. 2.10. Using digital restoration, the visual quality is equivalent to an in-focus regular lenslet.
