Four was an extremely important number to the Pythagoreans. In addition to the four elements from which the ancient Greeks constructed the entire world, these elements could be described with only four properties, the primary qualities of cold, warm, dry and moist. The group of numbers from 1 to 4 , which add up to 10 , the Pythagoreans called the “tetractys” (fourness). These four numbers were, according to the understanding of the time, the key to the mathematical description of the world.

The Pythagoreans took an oath not to reveal the teachings of the school of Pythagoras, and Pythagoras is praised as the one who discovered the tetractys:
Surely not! By Him who gave the tetractys to our race… ([130] from p. 243)
The symbolic representation of the tetractys was usually done by arranging the numbers in triangular form as individual symbols in rows one above the other. Such a triangular number is depicted in the painting “The School of Athens” by the Italian Renaissance painter Raphael. A huge fresco on one wall of the “Stanza della Segnatura” (“Room of the Segnatura”; a hall in the Vatican) depicts a fictional as well as illustrious assembly of ancient philosophers, including Plato, Aristotle, Socrates, Ptolemy, and Diogenes (Fig. 2.25). At one place Pythagoras sits writing, while a student hands him a slate. At the bottom of the slate is the tetractys of Roman ones (I) with the sum 10 (X, see Fig. 2.26) written underneath.
The eye exudes as a light that encompasses the objects and thus creates a visual impression. According to the theory of Diogenes, the image develops in the pupil with the spirit (the air) of the eye from the interaction of spirit and picture the visual sensation. ${ }^{78}$ Diogenes also believed that eye color had a significant effect on visual performance ([132], p. 94).

According to Theophrastus, Anaxagoras held the principle that something can be perceived only if it differs in composition from that of the particular sense organ (e. g., eye or ear), the similar being insensible to the similar. Vision is effected by a reflection of the object in the pupil, but this occurs only if the eye and the object were dissimilar in color ([133], p. 350). ${ }^{79}$ Anaxagoras, as an inveterate materialist, taught the view that the sun was only “a lump of matter of nothing but fire” ([134], p. 105), and for this was accused of sacrilege and thrown into prison ([135], p. 300).

Leucippus’ leitmotif of determinism is still surprisingly relevant after more than 2500 years. Nobel laureate ‘ $\mathrm{t}$ Hooft takes a very similar view in December 2018. I believe that all the laws of nature are completely deterministic. Nothing happens without a reason.
The atomistic idea of Leucippus was refined by his pupil Democritus in his “Mikros Diakosmos” (Small World Order) ${ }^{80}$ to a theory of sight. Basically Democritus distinguishes between the actual object and its perception (in [137], p. 60).
We perceive in reality nothing veritable, but only what changes according to the particular condition of our body and the influences flowing towards or against it.
This statement is the primacy of virtual reality: what we see is never the object itself, but always only what has somehow been presented to our senses. This form of insight Democritus calls the inauthentic cognition, to which he counts vision, hearing, smell, taste, and feeling [137], p. 61). The knowledge of Democritus’s doctrine of sense perception comes mainly from the transmission of Theophrastus’s “De sensu et sensibilibus” (in [139], pp. 207-213). All things continuously emit atoms, which as “eidola” (“little pictures”) reach the senses and can be perceived in this way.

In his dissertation Karl Marx had dealt with the differences in the philosophy of Democritus and Epicurus, and inevitably came to speak of Eidola (from [140], p. 297):from them as surfaces and carry them into appearance. These forms of things constantly stream from them and penetrate the senses, and by this very means, make the objects appear.
